Congratulations to our retiring members. They have served the children of Melrose for a total of 314 years. We thank them for sharing their love of learning with thousands of students during those years and wish them the very best of health and happiness in the next chapter of their lives.

We also congratulate Colleen Clougherty, the recipient of this year's annual MEA scholarship.  It is awarded annually to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in the field of education. Colleen will be attending Keene State College in the fall.

It is our pleasure to announce the names of the recipients of the annual MEA bonds. One student in each fifth grade classroom was selected to receive a $50 bond. Students are selected based on their outstanding citizenship. Our congratulations go out to these students and to their parents as well.

Web site highlights

Under Officers and Executive Board you will find contact information for our MEA officers and building representatives. There is also a link to e-mail Naomi Baline, our MEA President, as well as the phone number in our office and Naomi's association cell phone number.

By using the Calendar link you will find the 2008 - 2009 school calendar with all dates and locations for MEA Executive Board meetings, pay dates for both 21 and 26 payrolls, national and religious holidays and school vacations, system wide professional days, and other important dates. If you have concerns or items you would like to bring to the Executive Board meeting for discussion, speak to your building rep, contact the office, or come to the meeting yourself.  Members are always welcome.

Related links will get you to the MTA and NEA home pages, the Mass Department of Education, the MTRB (Retirement Board), the Northeast Consortium site (professional development options) and the Melrose Public Schools site among others.

The location of our monthly Executive Board meeting changes each month, but directions are available at the Schools/ Directions link.

You now have access to our contract in PDF format with an easy to use index providing links to specific areas of the agreement. Use the topics link on the left side to search or type in a specific word or phrase such as "maternity leave" and you will be zapped to info in the contract on that topic. I think this component will prove very useful to our membership. We are currently in negotiations as our current contract term expires on August 31, 2008. Negotiations will begin again in September.

In addition, we will be developing a members area, which will be a secure page, requiring a log in. We will be able to use this for more sensitive information for our members' eyes only.

The forms/downloads page has crucial information including samples of many important documents such as the professional upgrade form, personal and professional leave request forms, information on maternity leave, direct deposit request forms and others.

This web site can be a very useful tool for our membership.  Please encourage others to use it.
